Southern Athletics League Division 3SE - Sunday 19th May 2019
On a rather grey inclement day in Wimbledon Park, a small group of RPAC athletes joined Dorking & Mole Valley AC and Holland Sports to compete collectively in the Southern Athletics league (Div 3SE).
Dan Statham was first up making a giant leap of 1.63m in the men’s high jump. In a rather crowded ladies’ 800m field, Jo Davey delivered a decent run of 2 mins 23 seconds. Drew Burridge was in fine form as he confidently navigated the bends of the 400 metres against a very strong senior men’s field. Drew also ran a good 200m. Jo Davey was back again later on collecting a few points in the women’s 5000m against some some super speedy endurance specialists.
Last competitor of the day was a very dedicated Dave Rayner who stepped in at the last minute to run the men’s 3000 metres. Despite a tough field and rainy conditions, Dave still pulled out a very respectable 11 mins 18 seconds.
From the officials’ perspective, thanks also to Ashley Burridge for his excellent timekeeper skills on the track and Ivan Barrett for officiating in the field events.
No official results as yet, they will be published on the website when they are available.
Next meeting is in Lewes on Saturday 15th June.
Southern Veterans T&F League - Monday 20th May
On the following evening, it was the turn of the RPAC veterans, who met at the Epsom & Ewell track for the 2nd fixture in the Vets T&F League.
On the track, both Annette Morris (W60) and Mike Pocock (M60) doubled up at 800m and 3000m, with only a very short recovery between them. Highlight of these races was Mike's excellent 1st place in the 800m in 2:37.7, both Annette and Mike scored a significant number of points for the team. Ginevra Stoneley had an easy win in the W35 3000m, whilst Frank O'Regan and Paul Walters finished well up in the M35 and M50 3000m respectively. The final 800m runner was Dave Rayner (M50), fresh from his run in the SAL the day before, who once again showed a fine turn of speed in the finishing straight, overtaking his rival from Dorking & Mole Valley!
In the sprints, Ginevra warmed up for her 3000m with a speedy 200m, whilst Malcolm Woodman brought up the rear of the field in the M50 200m. The final track event was the 4 x 400m, where Frank, Dave, Paul and Malcolm made up the team, Mike being let off having only just finished his 3000m! Frank led out the team in a very fast 65.0, the others all ran in the mid 70's.
In the field, Moray Laing finished 2nd in the M50 shot put, once again showing his all round excellence in the throws. Ginevra and Malcolm also competed in the W35 long jump and M50 triple jump, scoring valuable points for the team.
Provisional results have the ladies finishing 5th out of 8 teams, whilst the men were 7th. Full results will follow as soon as they are available.
Once again, a massive thank you to all our officials: Donna Barrington-Smith, Naomi Jones, Ashley Burridge, Ian Crouch and Ivan Barrett.
Next fixture is Monday 10th June at Walton
