The U13 & U14 SE England Championships on 25th March at Reigate Priory delivered its usual mix of exciting races and the toughest competition.  To compete for your County is an honour in itself, to then achieve further success (against the best in SE England) is a sign of an athlete with real talent.  Surrey closed the 2016/17 Cross Country season in style with a power performance showing depth of individual talent now the envy of SE England.”

Quote above taken from the Surrey Schools Athletic Association web site report of the Inter-Counties XC match that took place on Saturday. Bright sunshine and a dry, fast course added to the spectacle as eight youngsters from RPAC helped Surrey to win all four races. The U14 (Y8) boys and girls, and the U13 (Y7) boys and girls. (A ninth RPAC youngster, Eva Marsh had to miss out as she was competing in the National Biathlon Championships in Crystal Palace).

The first race was the Y7 girls and an amazing run by Lucy Denece (a year 6 selected on the strength of having won her year six Surrey Schools Championship race two weeks ago), saw her finish in 3rd place! Not a bad debut season for Lucy who also ran for Surrey U13’s in the West Midlands Inter-Counties XC before Christmas!

Following on was the Y7 boys race where the always impressive Freddie Fowler took 5th place. Matthew Pickering came home in 9th place. Matthew, like Lucy is a year six, and he was selected after finishing 2nd in the year six Championship. A top ten finish confirms the potential he has shown this year.

The third race saw a strong run from Pippa Roessler who finished in 4th place, battling to the line to narrowly miss out on 3rd. Amanda Stapley ran well in her debut for Surrey and unfortunately, Frankie Evered succumbed to illness this week to miss out.

The last race, Y8 boys,  saw Felix Vaughan take the lead from the start and hold on to win. This is Felix's third Inter-Counties victory including his win in the corresponding fixture last year when he won the Y7 race. Felix has once again been selected for the South East team to run in the Virgin Mini Marathon next month. Oli Mooney completed our contingent of RPAC runners with a good run too.

A strong showing from a talented group to finish the cross country season in style!
