RIP John Mackenzie

Some of you will remember John Mackenzie. I'm sorry to report that John passed away over the last weekend.

John was a good friend of our running colleague Paul Sapsard (John on the left, Paul on the right). Some of you may not know Paul, but he leads out Sunday runs and is often seen at a MABAC as well as other events.

Paul says "I met John in March 1983 when we both joined Redhill and Reigate AC. We have done many races down the years and trained together. He knew a lot of the old Priory gang, and was a member when Redhill and Surrey Beagles folded. John achieved a 3 hour 10 marathon time in his heyday, but most of all his sense of humour shone through and helped me when the going got tough."

Message from our President and Founder John Hopkins

As you know it was John's 90th birthday recently and as a club we sent him lots of messages from members and a gift.

John has sent us a thank you card as below...

The front of the card shows "Morning Stretches" - very apt, and we are all doing these?!

The message from John to everyone in Reigate Priory AC.

Sunday 3rd March Volunteers needed for MABAC and Border League events

On Sunday, 3rd March, RPAC will be hosting a double-header in Priory Park, starting with the senior MABAC race at 10 am, followed by the junior Border League races from 12 to 2 pm. Experience tells us that we need lots of volunteers to stage these event;  it's a unique opportunity for junior parents to help at the senior fixture to allow seniors to run and for senior members to help at the Border League races so that parents can watch their children compete.

If you can help, please sign up here: We will need help transporting equipment from Battlebridge on Saturday afternoon, laying out the courses, marshalling at both fixtures, breaking down the courses, and transporting equipment back to Battlebridge. It will be possible to fulfil some of these roles and also run or spectate.

Wednesday 3rd July Summer Evening 10k 2024 by Moray Carey

We’ve now commenced planning the 30th edition of our historic Summer Evening 10k.

This edition was originally due to take place last July. Regrettably it had to be cancelled since overrunning roadworks on part of the course would have posed an unacceptable risk to participants.

To successfully deliver the 2024 event we’ll need our usual dedicated band of volunteers! The scheduled day is Wednesday 3rd July at 7.30pm - so please hold this date!

Thank you!

Moray - Acting Race Director.

PS - RPAC has no connection with the “Reigate Priory Park 10k Charity Fun Run” due to take place in May.

Swapping out the calendar on our website - postponed

Although there were loads up updates applied to the website last Sunday, the majority of these were under-the-hood so unnoticeable. We postponed the replacement of the calendar due to a problem that has arisen that will be fixed soon, so the migration to another calendar app will still happen soon.

You can always contact us regarding the website with queries or comments via email to

Saturday 23rd March Parkrun Tourism @ Reigate Priory by Paul Walters

It may appear on face value to bit a little silly to do a parkrun tourism to Reigate, it being the local one and all, but we have done it before. We've selected Reigate for Saturday 23rd March as it is the 10th anniversary of Reigate Priory parkrun on this day. It's also my birthday the day before, and this will be my first event as a MV60. The intention is to have a gazebo in the park with teas, coffees, croissants etc for breakfast afterwards. I don't know all of you, but all club members and families are invited and are very welcome to attend. It'd be lovely to see a good turn-out. Can we please all be in RPAC running tops on the day to show off the club colours?

Provisional dates for the later fixtures of RPAC parkrun tourism are below. Do please let us know if there is a clash with events that you're aware of.

Saturday April 20th
Saturday May 11th
Saturday June 8th
Saturday July 6th - possibly East Brighton parkrun
Saturday September 7th

Saturday 27th January South of England Cross Country Championships

Three RPAC juniors bravely took up the challenge of the South of England Cross Country Championships held at Beckenham Park Place on Saturday. Conditions were relatively favourable with the course mostly firm under foot and the temperatures mild, but this was still a tough undulating course with big fields of circa 180 runners in the Junior races. Pete Littlemore was up first in the U15 boys and continued his encouraging return to full fitness coming home in seventy third place. Neve Macgregor was up next in the U15 girls. Neve deserves a medal for commitment to the cause having an almost two hour trip to the race on the train and then having to shoot off straight after to honour a school commitment. She paced her race well working her way through the field to finish one hundred and thirteenth. The final RPAC runner was Euan Willis in the U17 boys who had a very strong run to finish an impressive twentieth.

Senior Section News

Saturday 3rd February 09:00 MABAC @ Windsor Great Park *** Next Saturday ***

The first MABAC of the year is always a little out of step with rest of the league races; for a start it's longer than the normal distance (at circa 7 miles instead of circa 5 miles) and it's run mostly on tarmac rather being full cross country. This year it's even more out of step as a. it's being held on a Saturday and b. it starts at 09:00 (rather than the usual 10:00). These conditions were imposed by the Crown Estate so unfortunately there is nothing that the league can do about them.
I'm hoping that RPAC members will treat this a sort of Parkrun tourism on steroids and turn in out in good numbers. Last year we finished in our lowest league position for several years. It would be good to turn that around and get off to a good start. If you haven't done one of these races before they are a low key way of representing the club and everyone who runs scores points so the more runners we can get out the more points we score. There is a shorter option of around 2.8 miles if you don't fancy the full distance. You can decide this on the day. There is no need to pre-register, we will sort you out with a number on the day.

This is a lovely run through Windsor Great Park with a great view of the castle at one point. I haven't spotted any royalty in previous years, but there's always a first time!

Car sharing for this race  is essential as car parking is expensive. (Again the Crown Estate mandate where we have to park and set the fees - grr!) I would suggest that those of use travelling from Reigate meet in Bell St car park at 07:30 (sorry!) as it's a fair walk from the car park to the start.

There is more detail on the MABAC website or you can email me () if you have any questions.

If you are unable to run but fancy a trip to Windsor I do know that volunteers are needed. Let me know if you are able to help.

Sunday 4th February Sunday run from YMCA Redhill *** Next Sunday ***

This year's Y2Y North Downs Trek will take place on 25th March and to get ready, there will be a special training session open to everyone on Sunday, 4th February. This year, there are two options for the training run - a 13 to 15 mile run at 9-minute mile pace led by Mike Pocock and Ian Burks heading south from the YMCA and a 10 mile run at a slower pace led by two runners from the Earlswood Running Club as well as Mel Fulton-Bell. Even better, there will be tea, coffee, and biscuits on offer before and after the runs, plus showers and free parking at the YMCA on Princes Road in Earlswood.
