Can Anyone Help Michael?
Michael Bashford is trying to track down some information about his late father's running career. Does anyone have any ideas how he could find out any further information?
He writes :
"This is a photograph of my father after he had just won a 7 mile road race, I don’t know where or when it was but sometime in the late 1940’s or early 1950’s.
My father was born in 1926 so would have been in his early 20’s and was a member of Oxted, Limpsfield and Tandridge AC/Harriers. I’m not sure of the club's exact name.
He also competed in races with the likes of Christopher Chataway, Chris Brasher and Dr Roger Bannister.
I still have the cup shown in the picture on the right.
I was born and grew up in Westerham and for 6 years lived a couple of doors away from the chap on the left in this picture, the one with the W on his vest.
His name was Arthur Galloway and in 1948 carried the Olympic torch on the last leg of its journey through Kent, from Sundridge through Westerham to the Kent Surrey border at Moorhouse.
As a torch bearer Arthur got to keep the torch which I have had the privilege of seeing and holding.
I have tried to find out more about the club my father ran for but as yet have been unable to find anything, there doesn’t seem to be anything online.
It would be nice to put a date and name/place and possibly a line up for this race, but I’m not sure where to start looking.
More pics of the 1948 Olympic torch’s journey through Surrey can be found here. "
If you can help Michael please let us know
