Falkland Islands Parkrun - by Moray Carey
Most, if not all RPAC members will be familiar with Parkrun, a free weekly timed 5k run founded in Bushy Park in 2004, and now staged in 730 locations worldwide, including Reigate.
Although there have been no events in the UK since March 2020, 117 events took place in 5 overseas countries on 21st November with more imminently scheduled to return.
The Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic Ocean hosts the world’s most southerly parkrun – the Cape Pembroke Lighthouse parkrun, a linear out-and-back course along a coastal track to the Lighthouse and back.
There are no facilities and no public transport from nearby Port Stanley unless you take a taxi! Participants need to return to Port Stanley to enjoy post run refreshments at the Waterfront Kitchen Café
The inaugural event on 26th Oct 2019 attracting 170 runners, the only time it has reached three figures. There have 32 events since then, pausing on 14th March but resuming on 19th September and taking place weekly since.
September is springtime in the Falkands and the weather conditions for the return on 19th was gale force winds and wind chill of -6!! So it was very commendable of the hardy 31 finishers but particularly the Officials to brave and endure the conditions. Last finisher came home in a time of 49.53.
The numbers of runners participating fluctuates, being as low as 26 and often in the 30’s and 40’s. The average is 46.8.
The event history shows participation by members of 34 clubs, the majority being British - possibly genuine “Tourists” – or maybe the home clubs of some of the 1200 British Forces stationed in the Falklands, a British Overseas Territory.
As an aside - on 24th October the first person home, Andy Alexander, represented the Moray Road Runners. Another member of this Elgin (Morayshire) based club, Blair Laird, has participated in Reigate Priory parkrun 45 times, finishing first on 16 occasions.
The 6 volunteers responsible for staging the Cape Pembroke Lighthouse parkrun undertake the following roles:
· Run Director
· First Timers’ Briefing
· Barcode scanning
· Tail Walker
· Event Day course check
No RPAC member has – so far - been listed as participating but if you fancy a visit to the Falklands, 12,000+ kms from the UK, there’s a twice weekly direct flight departing from RAF Brize Norton on Wednesdays and Sundays with a stopover in the Ascension Islands for a crew change and refuelling.
The return fare is fixed rate @ £2222.00 per non-resident adult and £1111.00 per non-resident child.
