 Couch to 5K Programme

After the angst of the weather forecast with heavy rain predicted, the conditions were kind to us for the first Couch to 5K programme session. A lull in the weather allowed us to complete the session without problems of lashing rain and gusts of wind. Fingers crossed the weather will only improve for our sessions. For anyone who would like to join the programme, this is still possible with full details are on the noticeboard. Thanks to members of the Saturday Social running group as well as Andrew Bamford, Adrian Grant and Sarah Walters for helping with the group.

Parkrun tourism revived Saturday 10th July

Assuming it is back by then, we are going to Riddlesdown Parkrun on Saturday 10th July for a bit of parkrun tourism, as well as being the chosen Couch to 5K programme graduation event. Keep the date in your diary. If we can't go to Riddlesdown we'll try to ensure that we have a back-up plan.

AFD Open Meeting Saturday 8 May - by David Mills

In his first track event, a mixed age group 1500m, U11 James Beaty ran a terrific race to finish in 2nd place. However, of the five U11's running 1500's, James's time of 5.43.7 was the quickest.

In the 800m at the same meeting, U15 Samuel Stapley won his race in a time of 2.13.1 taking 7 seconds off his previous PB!

Well done to both whose times were achieved despite the adverse conditions caused by the extremely windy weather.

Lilah Unwin breaks U15G'S 300m Club Record - by David Mills

At the Medway and Maidstone Open on 3 May, Lilah's time of 43.53 in the 300m was a new U15G'S club record for the event.

An amazing run by Lilah and the 15th quickest U15G'S 300m in the UK at the time of writing. A very strong start to the season by Lilah!

Apologies from editorial

In last week's newsletter it was stated that Eloise's 3000m time was a new club record. This was not quite correct. Eloise's time is the fastest run by a senior lady, but the club record was actually set by Pippa Roessler with a time of 10:12.8 running as an U15 in 2017. Please accept my apologies Eloise for my mistake.

We also need to apologise to Tom Almond for missing the fact that his half marathon time of 01:10:41 at Goodwood was a new club record (and we have had this verified!)

Some fantastic results this week from our seniors...

Bewel Water Marathon Saturday 8th May

Jim Vince ran this marathon. He reports that his training largely consisted of a 6 mile pub crawl walk with a few mates a week ago - i.e. no training! He was very happy with 6 hours 17 mins, and that's Jim's 95th marathon.

Kate Knight was also at Bewel Water, and was extremely happy with her time of 7:12:45 - a trail marathon PB by some 35 minutes, this being her 70th marathon. It was wet slippery conditions under foot. Kate had an easy day on Sunday, but returned to training today in preparation for ultra marathons (100km) on 22nd/23rd May and 29th/30th May. Phew.

Crystal Palace Half Marathon Sunday 9th May

Jack Finn finished in a time of 2 hours 2 mins. Well done Jack.

Jigsaw 10K (at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome) Sunday 9th May

George Roux was over the line in 35:02 and 8th in the results, Laura Ebbs was 40th in a time of 40:15 and 2nd in her category.

Some dates for your diaries

Herne Hill Track Endurance Meeting on Saturday 22nd May - see this.

Epsom Allsorts are holding their annual Hogsmill 5 mile ladies race virtually this year between 22nd and 31st May. Details are here and entry is free if you do not wish to receive a medal.

London Marathon Events is staging a Reunion 5km at Kempton Park on Saturday May 15 to help with the government’s events research programme. There will be three races in total with 3000 runners and 3000 spectators in each and it is designed in conjunction with the Department for Digital, Media, Culture & Sport to help with scientific data on how mass participation events can safely resume as part of the roadmap out of lockdown in England from June 21. Entry costs £15 – with registered spectators free of charge – and you can apply here. Note that evidently we will get a guaranteed London Marathon place for every 10 participants from Reigate Priory AC.
