A belated happy New Year to all RPAC members and parents!
Holly Run 2014
I'd like to start by thanking everyone who helped at the Holly Run before Christmas. Yet another successful RPAC-organised race "under our belts", with lots of enthusiastic runners and good weather. Many club members and parents covered a whole range of jobs large and small, but the biggest thanks have to go to our Race Director, Donna Barrington-Smith. Without Donna over-seeing every aspect of the race, there would have been no Holly Run.
Which brings me onto my second topic for this month, volunteering. I know that many of you volunteer on a regular basis when asked, and a small group do a very large amount for the club (you know who you are!). However, we need to ease the burden of that small core group, especially when somebody decides to take a well-earned break. Therefore, if there is any member or parent who is willing / interested in taking on a more major role within the club, then please contact myself or Jas Dhanda (Volunteer co-ordinator) to offer your services (e-mail addresses in separate e-mail).
The most important role that needs to be filled soon is that of the Race Director for the Summer 10k, as Moray Carey wishes to stand down after a number of years "in role".
On a less major note, volunteer marshals are required for school cross-country races on both next weekend (Saturday 17th) and Saturday 31st January. See the previous e-mail from Jas for details.
A very busy January, with the Surrey Cross-Country Championships, Tadworth 10 and 3rd Surrey League Cross-Country fixture for both ladies and men having taken place already. During the rest of the month we have:
- Surrey Schools Cross-country on Saturday 17th, Priory Park
- Southern Cross-Country Championships (Juniors & Seniors) on Saturday 24th, Stanmer Park, Brighton
- SE Schools Inter-counties Cross-Country on Saturday 31st, Priory Park
The club relies on a small number of individuals to train and coach our athletes. We need more coaches at every age group and at different levels to be able to offer better coaching to more athletes. The club pays for the courses; in return we expect regular assistance/leadership at our training sessions. The first step is the Leading Athletics course which is a 3 hour course. You can then progress to other qualifications.
If you are willing to get involved in this rewarding activity, please contact Mike Gent, Greg Knott, Dave Mills or Ivan Barrett for the juniors; Sue Carnell or Ian Martin if you are keen to coach senior runners.
Scores for the Grand Prix have now been updated following the December & January races and are on the website on the Grand Prix page under the Results tab.
Our next race is the Valentine’s 10K on 15th February. Also 2 bonus points are available for participating in the Surrey XC league race on 8th February.
There are a number of free seminars available to us via Active Surrey. Although many of these are directed towards organisers and coaches, they are all open to any member of the club.
If anyone does decide to attend a course, please book yourself on direct, but let Anthony Collins know that you are planning to attend.
