Our Club History
I've mentioned before that I'm keen to try to put together a potted history of our club. We know of course, that it was founded by our club president John Hopkins, but not very much more than that. I have recently had the pleasure of chatting to Rita Diffley who was one of the founder members of the club (there is a picture of her before the 1987 London Marathon here), and at one time the club's high jump coach. Rita was kind enough to share some anecdotes from the early days of the club and she also has some copies of some very early club newsletters dating back to 1983. More of this to come, but if you know anything about how, why and when the club came into being, or you can share some stories from the early days of the club please get in touch via

Final Reminder that tomorrow's track training is cancelled as it is MABAC at Wimbledon Common at 19:30
A final reminder that we are cancelling tomorrow evening's track session to enable people to run the MABAC race at Wimbledon.
We're currently lying in second place in the MABAC league so it would be great to get another strong turnout from RPAC for this event.
This is always a good event which starts and finishes at Wimbledon Rugby Club. It's close to the A3 so it's easy to find for a change AND there's lots of parking.
The bar is open and there is a buffet provided by Wimbledon Windmilers so we can have a bit of a social afterwards.
More details are here MABAC - Wimbledon Common - Wimbledon Windmilers - Mabac Running league
If you have run a MABAC race this season please try to remember to bring along your race number.
Meet in Bell St Car Park for a prompt departure at 18:00 for car sharing and lifts. If you haven't already done so, please let me know if you are able to offer a lift to someone else or you need a lift

Jimmy James Handicap Update
Dorking and Mole Valley AC have very kindly offered us the opportunity to participate in their Winter Handicap series as we did pre-Covid. We will be running this as the Jimmy James Handicap series again.
There is a slight change to procedure as Dorking have asked us to pre-register the week before each race. A number will be issued to each athlete which they keep for the season. I'm told no registration, no race! The races will be held on the last Thursday of each month starting at 7pm from September through to March. For the initial registration you will need to provide a current 5K time, email address, mobile and ICE info.
SLH NADI Thursday 28th July
Well done to Gavin, Jamilla, Alistair, Bethany, Sam, Jake, Jake and Kate who completed the third and final SLH Near As Damn It 10K race last Thursday. Full results of the race are available here. I think I am right in saying that only Alistair, Bethany and Kate ran in all three races of the series, with total times of 02:23:15, 02:28:33 and 05:28:57 respectively. Bethany won the Senior Ladies prize and Kate the Ladies' Vet 55 prize. Well done to you both. Full series results are here.
Round Reading Ultra Marathon Saturday 30th July
Despite having only two hours sleep after his night shift, Jim Vince completed the Round Reading 50km Ultra in 6hrs 31 minutes. I think I'm right in saying that this is Jim's first Ultra of the year as he's been carrying an injury. He reports that the course was "flat to undulating, but generally lovely with more cover than expected" although it was "a tad muggy". He says that it was quite sociable as there were a number of other 100 Marathon Club members participating . Well done Jim!
East Peckham 10K Sunday 31st July
Michael Bashford and his son Nick completed the East Peckham 10K yesterday. Michael finished in 01:05:33 and his son in 01:17:46. Well done Michael and Nick!
Usha's 250
I happen to know that Usha will be doing her 250th Parkrun at Banstead Woods this coming Saturday (6th August). I'm sure that she would appreciate a good turnout from fellow RPAC members to help her celebrate.
Leatherhead Fire Station Charity 10k 2022 by Moray Carey
The Leatherhead Fire Station 10K is a challenging race run over a semi-urban, semi-rural, undulating, multi terrain course described as “4k uphill, 2k downhill and 4k flat with 70% road and 30% trail”. It’s organised by the Red Watch Team to raise funds for local charities.
The 2022 event takes place on Remembrance Sunday 13th November and commences at 11.02am following a respectful 2-minute silence.
The race starts (and finishes) at Leatherhead Fire Station but soon steeply climbs via the Ridgeway. After reaching the top, runners are Marshalled by Fire Service personnel over the A246 (Young Street) to enter Norbury Park where the scenic ascents and descents provide some spectacular panoramas.
Trionium’s informative website includes some insightful images of the course here.
Refreshments are available at the Fire Station including a tempting array of home made cakes at Trish & Tracy's renowned Tea and Cake stall!
The entry fee is £15 and entry is via Sport Systems

Southern Counties Veterans League - South London Division Croydon 20th July
Steve Smith reports that lots of teams had limited numbers. There were only 2 teams in the women's relay. A lack of officials meant that the triple jump had to be cancelled. Despite this, it was a good meet and there were lots of strong performances from the RPAC team. The highlights were Nick Wade winning his 5000m race in 20:08.3 and Gavin Lawrence and Steve Smith winning their javelin categories with throws of 26.67 and 24.83 respectively. Andrew Pringle and Alistair Swanepoel competed in the 200m. Well done to you all!
Surrey Slog Half Marathon Sunday 24th July
Well done to Ben Stanton, Jez Greenwood, Jon Payn and Jim Vince who completed the Surrey Slog Half Marathon on Sunday. The course is tough - three times up Holmbury Hill and it was hot. I think I had the right idea as I was in the shade manning the water station!
Provisional results are here and there are some more photos here
Ben Stanton finished in second place in 1:38:24. He must have got a wiggle on as he was in third place when I saw him last (around the 11.5 mile mark) . Jez Greenwood was 10th in 01:44:27, Jon Payn was in 31st place in 01:59:36 and Jim Vince was in 59th place in 02:27:44. Well done Gents!
Conner Wickens Spartan Champion
Over the course of 16th-17th of July Conner Wickens rounded off this year's Spartan series of races and was crowned age grade champion.
Conner gives an update on his season.
"The Spartan Race series is made up of four different events in three different locations.
Henley on the Thames was the first event of the season and ‘the Beast’ race was the first event. This is the equivalent of a half marathon with 30 obstacles. Considering that I failed 3 obstacles on this event I manage to scrape first place! Day 2 of the Henley weekend was the ‘Sprint’ race; the equivalent of a 5k with 20 obstacles. As you can imagine this was a quick race and having done the race the day before I had heavy legs but when you get to the start line the adrenaline takes over! I managed to get a big win by 5 minutes in that race!

Liz Clocks Up 500 Parkruns
Congratulations to Liz Mason who completed her 500th Parkrun at Banstead Woods on Saturday. Liz clearly likes Banstead Woods as she has run all but twelve of the 500 there. She ran her first Parkrun on 1st August 2009. I'm sure she won't mind me telling you that she was faster on her most recent Parkrun than she was on her first. Well done Liz!

Marathon 106 for Kate
Kate Knight completed her 106th marathon (or more) over the weekend, taking on the Yorkshire 100km Ultra Challenge. She reports that it was very hilly, stony and rocky in places, but she's very pleased to have done it again. Well done Kate. You are a phenomenon.

News From Nottingham
Paul and Sarah Walters are away at the moment. Paul writes:
"Sarah and I are up in Nottingham. We were going to run Woolaton Parkrun but it was cancelled due to setting up for another event in Woolaton Park, so we decided to try Bestwood Village Parkrun. We were a bit apprehensive as on the walk to the start a chap told us that it was in the top 10 parkruns in the country for difficulty. We ran together. Sarah showed some tenacity up the hills, walking up the severe bits (like everyone around us) and we finished inside 40 minutes. A demanding but really friendly event, and highly recommended if you are ever in the area.

Summer Evening 10k by Moray Carey, Race Director 2022
A massive “thank you” to everyone who volunteered to help at the 29th Summer Evening 10k in a variety of roles and for your indispensable contribution to its success!
My very special thanks go to fellow members of the core planning team since March – Nat, Ginevra & Paul (Walters), later enlarged with the addition of Usha and Colin.
Recognition is also due to Ian Moore who created the event 30 years ago and was Race Director for a number of years. Ian, together with wife Janet, marshalled at last Wednesday’s event.
Thanks also to former Race Director, Chris Veale, for arranging effective, self-financing advertising.
I’m very grateful to Naomi Jones who (again) undertook the role of Event Adjudicator, whose job it is to independently monitor that the conditions of the Race Licence issued by UK Athletics are followed.
Cheers to Pistachios in the Park for kindly allowing the free use of their café as Race HQ!
Finally, enormous gratitude to Thurlowe Clarke, Independent Financial Advisers, for their continued very generous sponsorship. MD Dan also presented the awards to the individual and team winners.
In the course of organising the 2022 event, RPAC met - and overcame - a number of challenges, including a proposed road closure on the race route for highway works.
But we don’t rest on our laurels and any feedback about any aspect of the race is welcome, particularly if you think things could have been done better so that, going forward, improvements can be factored into a future race plan.
If so please email
Carmela Charalambous joins the Reigate Priory AC Committee

Wednesday 13th July - Wakehurst Willow 2022 by Moray Carey
The Wakehurst Willow 8k is an incomparable event which provides the unique opportunity of running within the grounds of Wakehurst, 200 hectares of diverse landscapes, ornamental gardens, woodlands and a nature reserve managed by Kew Gardens on behalf of the National Trust.
The challenging, 2-lap, multi terrain course starts from the Stables restaurant then meanders around the perimeter of the botanical gardens over tracks, trails and paths passing flora from around the world, giant redwood trees, lakes and the world-famous Millennium Seedbank.
Due to the undulating nature of the landscape, there’s a precipitous descent to negotiate down into the Loder Valley and, later, a compensating steep ascent!
The latest edition took place on after closing time on Wed 13th July after a 2 year absence due to Covid.
The course was well Marshalled by enthusiastic members of Haywards Heath Harriers, who organise the race, and there were excellent facilities – ample free parking, loos and refreshments were available from the coffee shop.
The race was chip timed and the 298 finishers, predominantly from Sussex clubs, received a commemorative wooden medal. The fastest 2 men and women also received a trophy plus a Friends of Wakehurst annual membership.

We made our final appearance in the quiz before the summer recess on Thursday 7th July - Paul Walters, Sue Carnell, Moray Laing, Ian Moore, Janet Moore and Stewart McIntyre. We won, with the proceeds (as usual) going to the YMCA.

We will be also going for breakfast at the Crawley Toby Carvery off the A23 afterwards. If you'd like to attend for breakfast please let us know by emailing . We'll be meeting at Gossops Green Parade (RH11 8HH) at 8:30AM.
Sunday 24th July MABAC Surrey Slog Half Marathon
The Surrey Slog Half Marathon is organised by MABAC. It is a major fundraiser for them (in fact it's their only fundraiser this year) and this enables them to stage the regular fixtures throughout the year. As a member club we are required to provide a small number of volunteers to help marshal the race. It takes place around Holmbury Hill near Holmbury St. Mary.
If you are able to help out please let me know by emailing .
