9 veteran members of the club took to the track at the Weir Archer Centre in Kingston on Monday, in the first Vets League fixture for 2021. There was no team competition because of COVID, instead men & women ran together in a series of graded races, whilst in the field events everyone competed together in a single pool.
Alistair Swanepoel and Carmela Charalambous were both competing on the track for the first time. Alistair ran steadily at the start of both his 800m and 3000m races, but accelerated well to comfortably win both races. Carmela on the other hand adopted a slightly less conservative approach at the start of her 3000m, then settled down into a more acceptable pace, finishing in a good 2nd position.
Angie Steadman celebrated her return to the track in Priory colours, after a 30+ year hiatus, by sprinting a 100m. She described it afterwards as "bringing back fond teenage memories"!
In other races, Jo Davey opened her 800m season with a swift winning run, followed home by Tim Kimber in his first race on the track in 2 years. Jo then almost immediately after ran in a 400m, along with Mike Pocock, Annette Morris and Malcolm Woodman. The final series of 3000m saw Frank O Regan finishing well up in the quickest race, with Mike and Annette also having a quick turn-around after their 400s.
The final Long Jump competition saw Jo and Angie take to the runway, their performances being rewarded by UK W45 rankings of 2nd and 6th respectively.
The 2nd Vets League match will be on Monday 5th July at the David Weir Centre in Sutton (where we're expecting big things of Tim after his impromptu testing of the facilities there last night!). Events will be 1500m, 200m, 5000m, Triple Jump, Shot and Javelin.
