Reigate Priory AC News 23rd November 2020

Hello everyone. I hope you're all keeping safe and well. I read in the news this morning that the government plan to allow outdoor grassroots sport to recommence from 3rd December. Obviously we don't have confirmation or any detail of this, but fingers crossed that it will allow us to return to group training (see below).

New Club Members

Please join me in extending a very warm RPAC welcome to Damian Weaver who has recently joined the club.

Club Hoodies

Senior club hoodies will be available for collection from Usha from tomorrow. Please contact  to arrange collection.

Senior Training

Subject to lockdown ending, senior coached sessions at Battlebridge will resume during the week commencing Monday 7th December, i.e. there will be no session on Thursday 3rd December. Look out for e-mail with new groupings & schedule prior to the resumption. Resumption of other coached sessions will  be advised by the coach in charge.

Love Reigate

Love Reigate is a new business venture started by RPAC member Julian Rowlands.

Love Reigate helps support and promote local businesses and donates a share of its membership fees to support the local Loveworks charity.

How does it work? It has two key features. Firstly, by purchasing a membership card you will get exclusive discounts from participating local businesses. Secondly, you can purchase a gift card to spend at participating local businesses.

Julian is offering RPAC members an exclusive deal until the end of December of buy a membership card and get a partner card free. This is a saving of £20.

Kate's 2020 Achievement

Kate Knight completed her goal of running 2020 miles in 2020 yesterday (22nd November). Not content with that, she has just signed up for the Centurion 100 mile challenge which is to be completed by the 29th November!

As always Kate is raising money for the SASH charity (which is the charity for East Surrey Hospital). To date she has raised over £3200 - outstanding! If you'd like to support Kate you can visit her fundraising page here.

Battlebridge floodlights turned on

Just a reminder that the floodlights at Battlebridge will be switched on again this week between the hours of 6 - 9pm Monday to Thursday.

Obviously, everyone using the track must adhere to the current rules, in particular stay within your household group, or one plus one, whilst maintaining social distance.

Fly5K Virtual Competition

This is a final plug for the Fly5K virtual competition set up and run by Robin's brother, Graham Smith.  This is a free weekly self-timed 5K run on Saturday mornings. Full details are in last week's newsletter or on the Fly5K website.

I think Robin is the only RPAC runner to participate to date frown

Go on, you know you want to...

Did you know that you can easily purchase a technical running shirt from the club's stock from the designs below?

As you can see these designs are available in three colours - Red, Dark Blue and Light Blue - and are for general running, training and social runs. Please note they are not suitable for events and races when representing the club. They are offered in men's, women's and youth sizes and cost £15.00 each (or £12.50 for youth sizes).

Battlebridge floodlights turned on

With Council approval, we will be switching on the floodlights at Battlebridge between the hours of 6 - 9pm Monday to Thursday, for the duration of lockdown.

This is to make it easier for both club members and members of the public to exercise whilst restrictions are in place.

Obviously, everyone must adhere to the current rules, in particular stay within your household group, or one plus one, whilst maintaining social distance.

Virtual Competitions

You will remember that during the Spring lockdown we ran a series of virtual competitions. To get us started this time we recently received the following email from Graham Smith who is Robin Dewar-Smith's brother, about a virtual competition called Fly5K. (Note - Apologies for the miscommunication last week where Graham was introduced as Robin's brother-in-law rather than his brother).

"Several months ago during the first lockdown I set up a free weekly Saturday morning virtual 5k, and wondered if your club members might be interested in taking part. We have members of around 30 clubs taking part each week and an average of 140 runners of all abilities and ages. It's intended to be a bit more race focused than (non)parkrun, being at a specific time (8-12 on Saturday morning), and we also have an inter club competition every three weeks, the next one being this Saturday 21st November. Club runners can submit times from other events or 5k sections from longer runs too. Our Facebook group is the key !.. as it means we can actually share our race efforts, etc. and get to know a wider group of people beyond our own clubs whilst normal racing can't take place. If this sounds of interest and you think RPAC members might like to take part then all they need to do is have a look at our website www.runfly5k.com and if they're on Facebook they can join us at facebook.com/groups/fly5k. There's no need to register and anyone can take part. We've had great feedback about how motivating it is for people right now, so hopefully we can spread that wider to members of clubs like yours. "

It would be good to support Graham and there seem to be some quick times so it could be a good opportunity to get some RPAC runners up amongst the leaders.

The Reigate CheckPoint Run Challenge Race 1 2020 - by Moray Carey

Members may be interested in this event which is proposed to take place at 8:00AM on Saturday 12th December 2020.

Is that Usha in the not parkrun email?

It was reported to editorial that a sharp eyed Reigate Priory AC member noticed Usha pop up in the "not parkrun" email that we think went national.

I've heavily blurred the name to protect the informant. (Although it was Mike - LOL.)

Christmas Come Early

Just in time to start your Christmas shopping, the iProsports Club Zone has been updated to include lots of new items of kit and accessories. Some items are available in dark blue as an alternative to the normal red. There are even club bobble hats just for you Linda Rodriguez smile  There are also size guides for many of the items now which should make the kit a bit easier to order.

Latest Results

Ginevra set a new club age category record by running a 5k in 19:21 at the Lee Valley Velopark on Saturday. She was the second lady runner home, finishing just 1 second slower than the first placed runner. Great result Ginevra!  Malcolm continued his return to racing at the same event finishing in 27:10. Well done Malcolm!

The Impact of the Latest Lockdown Restrictions

We are awaiting updated guidance from England Athletics in response to the Government's announcement on Saturday evening. EA are working with Sport England, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport and other stakeholders to provide absolute clarity about the impact of the lockdown restrictions on our sport. It is worthwhile keeping an eye on the EA homepage, but the committee will endeavour to update you as guidance is issued.

Training will take place within our Covid secure environments as normal this week on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. On Tuesday we will have sufficient coaches to allow SENIOR runners who normally train on Thursdays to attend on a first come first served basis to a maximum of 24 runners. The 7pm session will be less intense and the 8pm session will be for endurance.

Irrespective of any update from EA athletes can continue to exercise within the government guidelines from Thursday 5th November onwards. The government guidelines state "You can exercise or visit outdoor public places with the people you live with, your support bubble, or 1 person from another household" where "outdoor public places" include parks, beaches and the countryside.

Hello everyone. I hope you're all keeping safe and well. It's another very short newsletter this week I'm afraid. Enjoy the half term and I hope the weather improves!

Priory Relays Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th November 2020

By now you should have received two emails about the Priory Relays - one is to ask if you want to participate and the other to ask if you can volunteer to help stage the event.  If you have not yet replied please can I urge you to do so.

Please note that there seems to be an intermittent problem with Hotmail/MSN/Live email delivery at the moment which means that some people are getting an email delivery failure when attempting to reply to for example, Tom or Nat. This is nothing to do with the club email system and if you do experience it please try re-sending your email, it will get through eventually.

A reminder of the details :-

The Priory Relays will be held at the Mid Surrey Pony Club, Hurst Road, Walton on the Hill, KT20 5BN.

The plan is to run the ladies teams on Saturday 14th November starting from 10:00AM and men on 15th November in the same format.

The course will be approx 1.5 miles long and there will be 4 runners per team.  We will be using chip timing to record individual runners' times.

We are planning to enter 2 ladies' teams and 6 men's teams.

Ian's Wednesday Improvers and Recovery Run

As Ian Edmonds is on his own this week numbers will be limited to 12 and it will be a case of first come first served. If you know that you can't make the session this week, or you definitely plan to run it, it would be helpful if you could post a message on the WhatsApp group to get an idea of numbers.

Beachy Head Marathon and Half Marathon

Nick Wade and Kate Knight completed the Beachy Head Marathon on Saturday in what must have been truly horrendous conditions. Nick finished in 4:59:50 (phew!) and Kate finished in 8:22:04. Well done to both of you!

I also noticed that Chaarl Jordan completed the Beachy Head Half Marathon the previous Sunday (18th October) in a speedy 1:37:19 - well done to you too Chaarl!

Saturday Social Group

A reminder that there will be a Saturday Social Run on 31st October.

Sunday 18th April 2021 Boston Marathon - from Jim Vince

I just thought I'd put a plug in for the Boston Marathon to be held in Lincolnshire on 18 April 2021. With London Marathon now October 2021, the UK Boston marathon is around the normal London marathon time of the year in Spring, but is also a very flat and fast marathon for a PB. I've just signed up and noticed there are only 60 places remaining in the 1000 limit so wanted to let people in the club know if they were looking for a replacement for the London Marathon.

See the Boston Marathon website for further details.
