Reigate Priory AC News 22nd February 2021

Hello everyone. I hope that you and your families are all keeping safe and well in these strange and difficult times. Hopefully by the time you read this we will have a clearer picture of when we may return to some semblance of normality including a return to training and competition.

Happy Birthday Malcolm!

I am reliably informed that today is Malcolm's birthday. Please join me in wishing him a very Happy Birthday. No change of age category for Malcolm this year.  I do know that he celebrated with an 8.6 mile run though.

EA Virtual Road Relays

This weekend saw the culmination of Round 2 of the England Athletics Virtual Road Relays with all runs having  to be completed by 23:59 yesterday (Sunday 21st February) and uploaded by midday today. A total of 22 RPAC runners submitted times with the fastest 4 men and fastest 4 ladies scoring for the team.

You will recall that in the preliminary round we finished in 35th place with a total time of 4:01:52. This time we did even better and finished in 24th place with a total time of 3:54:21.

Scoring for the team were George Roux (26:21), Thomas Almond (26:24), Matthew Ryde (26:36), Francis Dunham (26:54), Ginevra Stoneley (30:49), Joanna Davey (31:38), Natalie Wilson (32:21) and Eloise Bull (33:18). Nearly everyone who had competed in Round 1 improved on their time in Round 2. Well done to everyone who submitted a time. For a small club we punch well above our weight!

From Round 2 the club finishing in first place will go through to the final round competing against the top teams from Athletics Northern Ireland, Scottish Athletics and Welsh Athletics in March. That club is Wirral AC with a total time of 3:32:39. For comparison with us, Wirral AC is the largest athletics club on the Wirral peninsula and has over 400 members.

A full list of RPAC runners and their results is shown in the section below.

Jimmy James Handicap

As you know we decided to make the EA Virtual Road Relays a handicap race with each participant submitting a target time which was subject to rigorous scrutiny and adjustment by Malcolm and myself.

The full results are shown below. It gives me great pleasure to announce that Ewan McKay is thus the winner of the Jimmy James Handicap Trophy for 2021.

Senior Club Championship Competitions for 2021

Despite the proposals for easing lockdown there still remains significant uncertainty about which races will actually happen this year and the potential for clashes with league fixtures, etc. In view of this the Team Captains and Committee agreed that for this year only the senior 10K, 10 mile and Half Marathon Championships will be awarded based on the fastest times recorded by RPAC athletes on Power of 10. Hopefully this is clear but if you have any questions please ask

Hello everyone. I hope that you and your families are all keeping safe and well in these strange and difficult times.

Floodlights at Battlebridge

Whilst the weather remains so cold and icy we'll be taking a decision on a daily basis about whether it's safe to turn on the floodlights. You should assume they will not be turned on unless there is a post to the contrary on the Facebook group.

On the subject of floodlights you will have seen from the minutes of the Committee meetings that we are seeking planning permission to upgrade the lighting. I am delighted to tell you that thanks to Ellis' hard work, we have secured a grant towards the cost of the upgrade from Reigate and Banstead Borough Council. Thank you Ellis!

Virtual Competitions

Obviously last week's virtual challenge didn't float anyone's boat as we had no response. Why not try this England Athletic challenge for size instead? Let us know how you get on.

EA Virtual Road Relays

Yesterday (7th February) all senior runners should have received an email about the second round of the EA Virtual 5 mile road relays.

In essence we want to get as many of our senior runners taking part as possible and we will be treating it as a club handicap race with the winner becoming the recipient of the Jimmy James Handicap Trophy for 2021.

If you didn't receive the email, you want to get your handicap time or you have any questions please email me at

Michael Crawley, Scotland International Runner, Author of Out of Thin Air: Running Wisdom and Magic from Above the Clouds in Ethiopia and his connection with RPAC - by Moray Carey

This article is sourced from various reviews of Michael Crawley’s insightful book “Out of Thin Air: Running Wisdom and Magic from Above the Clouds in Ethiopia”

However, there’s a link between Michael and RPAC which is revealed later.

Michael, 32, is an accomplished runner and has represented Great Britain and Scotland. He’s a member of Edinburgh club Corstorphine AAC. Reference to his power of 10 stats reveal his athletic pedigree – personal bests of 30.07 for 10k, 49.37 for 10 miles and 2.20.53 for the marathon.

Despite all the sports science and training resources available in the UK he investigated why east Africa’s long-distance runners lead the world. Ethiopian men hold six of the top fastest marathon times ever.

Michael spent 15 months in Addis Ababa living and training alongside a group of Ethiopian athletes which is chronicled in his book. Following this research he was awarded a PhD in anthropology by University of Edinburgh.

-

Michael, representing his Edinburgh club, was a participant in the 2014 edition of RPAC’s Summer Evening 10k winning in a time of 32.24!

Quickest RPAC runners that year were Alister Moses in 4th place in 35.36, Fiona Clark 8th in 37.35 and current Summer Evening 10k Race Director, Chris Veale, 11th in 38.18!

Other participants includes Jerry Carnell, Christian Froggatt and Gavin Lawrence finishing in 24th, 26th and 39th places respectively.

12 other members are shown in the Results as RPAC accredited runners although there are several others who are current or former members including some shown without affiliation.

-

Book review sources are The Guardian and The Times and this article in Runner’s World  summarises some of the main themes of the book.

London Marathon

The results of the ballot for the 2021 London Marathon (to be held on Sunday 3rd October) are being sent out today. Good luck to all RPAC members who applied for the ballot, hopefully you were all successful!

The 2020 Virtual London Marathon has been confirmed as setting a new Guinness World record for "The most users to run a remote marathon in 24 hours", this year's virtual event looks set to surpass that record.

Two Missing Trophies - still searching!

The Jimmy James Handicap and Ladies V35 Half Marathon trophies have been mislaid and have not been seen since the awards evening in January last year.

If anyone knows their whereabouts please contact me at

Kate's Challenge

From 1st February to 31st March Kate Knight has started on her 600 mile virtual trek for NHS charities together with the charity MIND. Kate will be walking most of it, including the London Winter Walk marathon on 27th March 2021 (an Action Challenge event). Kate has set up a fundraising page for East Surrey Hospital that you can find here.

EA Virtual Road Relays - see this for more information

As outlined in last week's newsletter RPAC finished in 35th place in the first round of this competition, and we have thus qualified for the second round. This is a five mile distance.

This will be run from 00:01 on Wednesday 10 February to 23:59 on Monday 15 February 2021. We can have as many first claim runners as we like sign-up for Round 2 (National Round) with the fastest 4 men and fastest 4 women scoring. The top club from Round 2 will progress to Round 3 (International Round).

Runners do not need to have taken part in Round 1 of the competition in order to run in Round 2.

In order to spice it up a bit more and get some more of you running Malcolm and I have decided to make Round 2 a handicap competition. If you ran in Round 1 your time will be used to calculate your handicap. If you plan to run in Round 2 send your predicted time to  for us to calculate your handicap time. Please let me know if you have any questions.

The Return of Virtual Challenges

As promised, here is the first virtual challenge of the current lockdown, continued from last week. We are starting with something simple - run or walk the shortest distance to find road names that spell out the word "MARATHON".  The words "road" and "avenue" do not count - although I suppose that if there were an "Avenue Road" (as there is in Epsom) I would have to allow the A!

Send your answers to me at  . Similarly if anyone has any good ideas for virtual competitions that can be undertaken by both junior and senior members please email me.

We’ve noticed that the container at Battlebridge is no longer water tight and there is risk of damage to its interior which includes of course the control for the flood lights.

Two Appeals for Help

We have been approached by two PhD students who as part of their research, are conducting investigations into different aspects of running.

The first is a student at Anglia Ruskin University who is doing research into running with spectacles. This takes the form of a survey which can be found here.

The second is being conducted by a student at Old Dominion University in Virginia who is researching the effects of nutritional intake on gastro intestinal symptoms experienced by runners. Details of this survey can be found here

If you are willing to take part you must be 18+ to complete either survey, the latter study has some further stipulations about eligibility.

EA Virtual Road Relays

There was coverage of our success in  the England Athletics virtual road relay in last week's Surrey Mirror.
