Tuesday 30th August - Summer Social

We're planning to hold a social event at the Battlebridge track on the evening of Tuesday 30th August. This will be a picnic and we're looking into whether we can get any local food vans along for the event.

We're planning to hold the Grand Prix Mile and also some mixed Junior and Senior 4 x 400m relays on the night as well.

We'll provide more details through the newsletter nearer the time.

Our Club History

I've mentioned before that I'm keen to try to put together a potted history of our club. We know of course, that it was founded by our club president John Hopkins, but not very much more than that. I have recently had the pleasure of chatting to Rita Diffley who was one of the founder members of the club (there is a picture of her before the 1987 London Marathon here), and at one time the club's high jump coach. Rita was kind enough to share some anecdotes from the early days of the club and she also has some copies of some very early club newsletters dating back to 1983. More of this to come, but if you know anything about how, why and when the club came into being, or you can share some stories from the early days of the club please get in touch via

Reigate Priory AC Couch to 5K Programme starting 24th September

Our next Couch to 5K Programme starts on Saturday 24th September.

The Couch to 5K Programme is for beginners to build up to 30 minutes of running over a 9 week programme, finishing with a 5Km parkrun to graduate from the programme on the 10th Saturday.

We encourage participants to register for this programme in time for the optional lead-in sessions which will be held on Saturday 10th September and Saturday 17th September.

Full details can be found on our website here. Please do pass this on if you know anyone who may be interested.

Give us your results please

If you run in an event, do please let us know your results by emailing . If possible please can you submit them by Sunday evening at the latest as this allows us to meet the deadline for the Surrey Mirror sports pages.

Max Clocks Up 100

Carol Orchard wrote to tell us the following:

"Just thought I'd drop the newsletter a note to say that Max has just completed a double 100.

Today Max completed his 100th junior parkrun at the Reigate junior course and has also successfully completed 100 times volunteering at the course on the same day. Most Sundays Max will be found running the warm up before running the 2km course, he'll often bar code scan or help with the finish tokens once he's finished. In fact Max has filled every volunteer position except Marshal and volunteer coordinator, he was Race Director when the kids took over for the parkrun's 2nd birthday.

He celebrated in true junior parkrun style. . . With cake. "

Well done to you Max on both 100s!

Final Reminder that tomorrow's track training is cancelled as it is MABAC at Wimbledon Common at 19:30

A final reminder that we are cancelling tomorrow evening's track session to enable people to run the MABAC race at Wimbledon.

We're currently lying in second place in the MABAC league so it would be great to get another strong turnout from RPAC for this event.

This is always a good event which starts and finishes at Wimbledon Rugby Club. It's close to the A3 so it's easy to find for a change AND there's lots of parking.

The bar is open and there is a buffet provided by Wimbledon Windmilers so we can have a bit of a social afterwards.

More details are here MABAC - Wimbledon Common - Wimbledon Windmilers - Mabac Running league

If you have run a MABAC race this season please try to remember to bring along your race number.

Meet in Bell St Car Park for a prompt departure at 18:00 for car sharing and lifts. If you haven't already done so, please let me know if you are able to offer a lift to someone else or you need a lift

Club Championship 10K Race

This year's Club Championship 10K race will be the Brighton 10K on Sunday 20th November. More details to follow later.

Jimmy James Handicap Update

Dorking and Mole Valley AC have very kindly offered us the opportunity to participate in their Winter Handicap series as we did pre-Covid. We will be running this as the Jimmy James Handicap series again.

There is a slight change to procedure as Dorking have asked us to pre-register the week before each race. A number will be issued to each athlete which they keep for the season. I'm told no registration, no race! The races will be held on the last Thursday of each month starting at 7pm from September through to March. For the initial registration you will need to provide a current 5K time, email address, mobile and ICE info.

SLH NADI Thursday 28th July

Well done to Gavin, Jamilla, Alistair, Bethany, Sam, Jake, Jake and Kate who completed the third and final SLH Near As Damn It 10K race last Thursday. Full results of the race are available here. I think I am right in saying that only Alistair, Bethany and Kate ran in all three races of the series, with total times of 02:23:15, 02:28:33 and 05:28:57 respectively. Bethany won the Senior Ladies prize and Kate the Ladies' Vet 55 prize. Well done to you both. Full series results are here.

Round Reading Ultra Marathon Saturday 30th July

Despite having only two hours sleep after his night shift, Jim Vince completed the Round Reading 50km Ultra in 6hrs 31 minutes. I think I'm right in saying that this is Jim's first Ultra of the year as he's been carrying an injury. He reports that the course was "flat to undulating, but generally lovely with more cover than expected" although it was "a tad muggy". He says that it was quite sociable as there were a number of other 100 Marathon Club members participating . Well done Jim!

East Peckham 10K Sunday 31st July

Michael Bashford and his son Nick completed the East Peckham 10K yesterday. Michael finished in 01:05:33 and his son in 01:17:46. Well done Michael and Nick!

Usha's 250

I happen to know that Usha will be doing her 250th Parkrun at Banstead Woods this coming Saturday (6th August). I'm sure that she would appreciate a good turnout from fellow RPAC members to help her celebrate.

Leatherhead Fire Station Charity 10k 2022 by Moray Carey

The Leatherhead Fire Station 10K is a challenging race run over a semi-urban, semi-rural, undulating, multi terrain course described as “4k uphill, 2k downhill and 4k flat with 70% road and 30% trail”. It’s organised by the Red Watch Team to raise funds for local charities.

The 2022 event takes place on Remembrance Sunday 13th November and commences at 11.02am following a respectful 2-minute silence.

The race starts (and finishes) at Leatherhead Fire Station but soon steeply climbs via the Ridgeway. After reaching the top, runners are Marshalled by Fire Service personnel over the A246 (Young Street) to enter Norbury Park where the scenic ascents and descents provide some spectacular panoramas.

Trionium’s informative website includes some insightful images of the course here.

Refreshments are available at the Fire Station including a tempting array of home made cakes at Trish & Tracy's renowned Tea and Cake stall!

The entry fee is £15 and entry is via Sport Systems

Southern Counties Veterans League - South London Division Croydon 20th July

Steve Smith reports that lots of teams had limited numbers. There were only 2 teams in the women's relay. A lack of officials meant that the triple jump had to be cancelled. Despite this, it was a good meet and there were lots of strong performances from the RPAC team. The highlights were Nick Wade winning his 5000m race in 20:08.3 and Gavin Lawrence and Steve Smith winning their javelin categories with throws of 26.67 and 24.83 respectively. Andrew Pringle and Alistair Swanepoel competed in the 200m. Well done to you all!

Surrey Slog Half Marathon Sunday 24th July

Well done to Ben Stanton, Jez Greenwood, Jon Payn and Jim Vince who completed the Surrey Slog Half Marathon on Sunday. The course is tough - three times up Holmbury Hill and it was hot. I think I had the right idea as I was in the shade manning the water station!

Provisional results are here  and there are some more photos here

Ben Stanton finished in second place in 1:38:24. He must have got a wiggle on as he was in third place when I saw him last (around the 11.5 mile mark) . Jez Greenwood was 10th in 01:44:27, Jon Payn was in 31st place in 01:59:36 and Jim Vince was in 59th place in 02:27:44. Well done Gents!

Conner Wickens Spartan Champion

Over the course of 16th-17th of July Conner Wickens rounded off this year's  Spartan series of races and was crowned age grade champion.

Conner gives an update on his season.

"The Spartan Race series is made up of four different events in three different locations.

Henley on the Thames was the first event of the season and ‘the Beast’ race was the first event. This is the equivalent of a half marathon with 30 obstacles. Considering that I failed 3 obstacles on this event I manage to scrape first place! Day 2 of the Henley weekend was the ‘Sprint’ race; the equivalent of a 5k with 20 obstacles. As you can imagine this was a quick race and having done the race the day before I had heavy legs but when you get to the start line the adrenaline takes over! I managed to get a big win by 5 minutes in that race!

Series race 3 was in the Brecon Beacons in Wales. I knew this was going to be a tough one for many, as the ‘the Beast’ race in Wales has the most gruelling terrain out of all the events. Even though I was a bit late to the start line I manage to fight my way to the front and to get a good lead and I came away with a win! After this event the total of the leader board for the series was 3000 points in my favour.
Race 4 was up in the Midlands and was the ‘Super Race’, which is the equivalent of a 10k with 25 obstacles where I came in second place. I raced the competitive Beast race the day before and although this wasn’t part of the series I landed 1st place in that one.
The prep going into this season was fantastic, definitely left no stone unturned. Next season I will be stepping up to the Elite category where I will be hunting down the big dogs."

Well done Conner!

 Liz Clocks Up 500 Parkruns

Congratulations to Liz Mason who completed her 500th Parkrun at Banstead Woods on Saturday. Liz clearly likes Banstead Woods as she has run all but twelve of the 500 there. She ran her first Parkrun on 1st August 2009.  I'm sure she won't mind me telling you that she was faster on her most recent Parkrun than she was on her first. Well done Liz!

Marathon 106 for Kate

Kate Knight completed her 106th marathon (or more) over the weekend, taking on the Yorkshire 100km Ultra Challenge. She reports that it was very hilly, stony and rocky in places, but she's very pleased to have done it again. Well done Kate. You are a phenomenon.

News From Nottingham

Paul and Sarah Walters are away at the moment. Paul writes:

"Sarah and I are up in Nottingham. We were going to run Woolaton Parkrun but it was cancelled due to setting up for another event in Woolaton Park, so we decided to try Bestwood Village Parkrun. We were a bit apprehensive as on the walk to the start a chap told us that it was in the top 10 parkruns in the country for difficulty. We ran together. Sarah showed some tenacity up the hills, walking up the severe bits (like everyone around us) and we finished inside 40 minutes. A demanding but really friendly event, and highly recommended if you are ever in the area.

By the way, the parkrun is on the site of an old colliery."

Wednesday 13th July - Wakehurst Willow 2022 by Moray Carey

The Wakehurst Willow 8k is an incomparable event which provides the unique opportunity of running within the grounds of Wakehurst, 200 hectares of diverse landscapes, ornamental gardens, woodlands and a nature reserve managed by Kew Gardens on behalf of the National Trust.

The challenging, 2-lap, multi terrain course starts from the Stables restaurant then meanders around the perimeter of the botanical gardens over tracks, trails and paths passing flora from around the world, giant redwood trees, lakes and the world-famous Millennium Seedbank.

Due to the undulating nature of the landscape, there’s a precipitous descent to negotiate down into the Loder Valley and, later, a compensating steep ascent!

The latest edition took place on after closing time on Wed 13th July after a 2 year absence due to Covid.

The course was well Marshalled by enthusiastic members of Haywards Heath Harriers, who organise the race, and there were excellent facilities – ample free parking, loos and refreshments were available from the coffee shop.

The race was chip timed and the 298 finishers, predominantly from Sussex clubs, received a commemorative wooden medal. The fastest 2 men and women also received a trophy plus a Friends of Wakehurst annual membership.

RPAC team and the Blue Anchor quiz

We made our final appearance in the quiz before the summer recess on Thursday 7th July - Paul Walters, Sue Carnell, Moray Laing, Ian Moore, Janet Moore and Stewart McIntyre. We won, with the proceeds (as usual) going to the YMCA.

Summer Evening 10k by Moray Carey, Race Director 2022

A massive “thank you” to everyone who volunteered to help at the 29th Summer Evening 10k in a variety of roles and for your indispensable contribution to its success!

My very special thanks go to fellow members of the core planning team since March – Nat, Ginevra & Paul (Walters), later enlarged with the addition of Usha and Colin.

Recognition is also due to Ian Moore who created the event 30 years ago and was Race Director for a number of years. Ian, together with wife Janet, marshalled at last Wednesday’s event.

Thanks also to former Race Director, Chris Veale, for arranging effective, self-financing advertising.

I’m very grateful to Naomi Jones who (again) undertook the role of Event Adjudicator, whose job it is to independently monitor that the conditions of the Race Licence issued by UK Athletics are followed.

Cheers to Pistachios in the Park for kindly allowing the free use of their café as Race HQ!

Finally, enormous gratitude to Thurlowe Clarke, Independent Financial Advisers, for their continued very generous sponsorship. MD Dan also presented the awards to the individual and team winners.

In the course of organising the 2022 event, RPAC met - and overcame - a number of challenges, including a proposed road closure on the race route for highway works.

But we don’t rest on our laurels and any feedback about any aspect of the race is welcome, particularly if you think things could have been done better so that, going forward, improvements can be factored into a future race plan.

If so please email

Carmela Charalambous joins the Reigate Priory AC Committee

Carmela has kindly volunteered to join the committee to fill the vacant position. Welcome to the committee Carmela!

We had some excellent performances and fast times in the first 2 matches and it would be great if more athletes could join us at K2.

Both Jo and I will be away for this match so please email both  and copy in Malcolm Woodman  who will be in touch with the team sheet and further details before the 16th.

Please contact us by Tuesday 12th July if you would like to compete or if you have any questions.

Lilah competes in English Schools 800m Final, Manchester July 2022

In the Surrey team at the English Schools T&F Championships in Manchester, Lilah Unwin put in two storming performances in the Inter-Girls 800m. The standard of competition was high as the top performing athletes from across England met for these major Championships.

Qualifying from a fiercely competitive heat on Friday, Lilah returned on Saturday for the final and finished 8th in a brilliant time of 2.14.68.

The two days of intense competition were live streamed so all the action could be followed on TV as it happened.

Lily B - Match 3 Kingston

The third round of this year's Girls track league was held at a gloriously sunny Kingsmeadow on Saturday. We had a good turn out from the U11s and U13s. A number of athletes were appearing for the first time for the Club. Olivia Aries, Laura Sensier and Emma Devenny had strong results for their first event in their respective combinations of 1500m, 100m, 200m and long jumps. Heather King showed she is a very able sprinter across the 100m,200m and 75m hurdles, and together with Amelia Jeffers helped Reigate win both the A and the B race in the 100m. Livvy Heppenstall improved her 1500m PB  and Lisette Matthews and Sophia Potter endured the hottest part of the afternoon to record very respectable times in their 800ms. It was great to finish the day with two full 4 x100m U13 relay teams.

In the U11s It was great to see three Reigate girls, Denise Ornella, Charlotte Ebbs and Emily Beatty, in the top six of the twenty competitors in the 600m. Amelie Potter and Maya Pocock both scored PBs in the long jump and Freya Else came very close to doing so. Tabitha Sensier and Brooke Gibson competed strongly in their first event. But the highlight was the 4 x 100m relay . After coming last, and then being disqualified in the first match, the girls had worked on their baton changes and came in a very respectable third place. Well done to all who competed and thanks very much to Ivan Barrett and Ian Crouch who officiated throughout the day.

We are going to Ifield Mill Pond Parkrun – see https://www.parkrun.org.uk/ifieldmillpond/ which is a flat parkrun, a little intricate in the route - https://www.parkrun.org.uk/ifieldmillpond/course/, and it is picturesque running around the millpond.

We will meet in the car park of Gossops Parade, Gossops Green, West Sussex, RH11 8HH at 8:30AM. The toilets at the parade should open by 8:30AM. From there we will walk to the start (just a 5-minute walk).

After the parkrun we will attend the Toby Carvery at Vancouver Drive, Crawley. RH11 7UR for a slap-up breakfast. We went to this restaurant last time and it was very good. Just so we can tell the restaurant the numbers can you please tell me if you are attending the breakfast by emailing  by Wednesday 13th July?

It’d be great to see you there whatever!

Wednesday 20th July SCVAC Veterans Track & Field League

The third fixture in the Vets T&F League is at Croydon on the evening of Wednesday 20th July, with the field events starting at 6.30 pm and the track at 7 pm.

Do please read the email and reply accordingly. If you can't find the email do please contact us on .

Sunday 24th July MABAC Surrey Slog Half Marathon - Volunteers Required

The Surrey Slog Half Marathon is organised by MABAC. It is a major fundraiser for them (in fact it's their only fundraiser this year) and this enables them to stage the regular fixtures throughout the year. As a member club we are required to provide a small number of volunteers to help marshal the race. It takes place around Holmbury Hill near Holmbury St. Mary.

If you are able to help out please let me know by emailing . At the moment I am the sole volunteer from RPAC, don't let me be Billy No Mates!

Summer Evening 10k

Thank you to everyone who has offered to volunteer for this Wednesday's Summer 10km.  It’s been incredibly tight to achieve the numbers required to run the event successfully and thanks to those who stepped forward over the weekend, we’re just about there.

Everyone who has volunteered should have received briefing instructions last night.

Those who are assisting tomorrow evening should meet by the tennis courts in Priory Park at 6pm to put out signs.  The meet point for those assisting on Wednesday afternoon is also in Priory Park by the tennis courts unless you are helping transport the equipment from Battlebridge.

Those who are marshalling or assisting with the evening event on Wednesday should meet by the tennis courts in Priory Park at 6:45pm for a briefing.

We thank you again for helping put this event on which we know brings valuable income into the club.

Should anyone have any questions, please contact  and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.

STOP PRESS We still need a couple of people to help put up signs around the route tomorrow (Tuesday) evening. If you can help please meet by the tennis courts in Priory Park at 6pm and let Ginevra know that you're coming to help.

Lost Property

In a couple of weeks time we will be having a clear out of the container at Battlebridge and there a number of water bottles and items of clothing that have accumulated there (pictures to follow). If unclaimed they will be recycled or donated to charity as appropriate.

UK Youth Development League, Lewes, Sunday 26th June by Dave Mills

A second trip this summer to Lewes for some of our U17s saw some excellent performances in the sunshine.

Samuel Stapley doubled up starting with a new PB in the 400m of 53.54 and a 2nd place finish, followed by his first 1500m Steeplechase. Samuel finished 1st in a great time of 4:39.46 which is inside the English Schools Entry Standard.  A new club record established!

Sam Rolaston took on another gruelling 3000m and a strong run saw him home in 9:51.62 earning maximum points by winning the U17 event.

There was a 3rd place finish in the 1500m for Euan Willis with a good time of 4:25.58.

Pictures show Sam Rolaston in his 3000m and Samuel Stapley leading at the Water Jump in the Steeplechase.

Wednesday 6th July Summer Evening 10k by Moray Carey, Acting Race Director

It’s only just over 1 week until we host the Summer Evening 10k on Wed 6th July!

Currently we have 130 entries and we'd really like to increase this for the big day.

Way of helping to achieve this include:

  1. Asking in places where you may have connections or contacts to display the A5 race flyer (available on our website here)
  • sports’ clubs (both athletic and other)
  • fitness groups
  • sports’ shops
  • works and community notice boards

2. Sharing any posts about the race posted on the club’s Facebook page (or creating your own)

Thanks in advance!

Moray.

Wednesday 15th June Surrey Quad Kids

The Young Athletes Club in Guildford hosted their annual Surrey Quad Kids Championship on Wednesday 15th June. Teams of five girls and five boys compete in a multi event formula.

The weather was fabulous and we had a lovely evening of athletics. There were some great individual performances, Mateo Mahop was second overall, by one point and Daisy Barton, Lisette Matthews and Lilah Twohy were 6th, 8th and 11th respectively in the Girls competition, but as important was the very strong and consistent scoring across the team with Jonty Smallwood, Gillies Macgregor, Oliver Agius, George Duncton, Daniel Kloes,  Flora Cowan, Freja Kargbo and Charlotte Ebbs all scoring well. At the end of the evening we were delighted to find ourselves third overall.

Thanks very much indeed to Ginevra, Niall Macgregor and Dan Matthews for their assistance with the officiating.

Saturday 25th June Match 2 of the Lily B League

There were some strong performances from the girls at Saturday’s Lily B event at Guildford.

Denise Ornella achieved a PB in the 600m and 75m, Charlotte Ebbs in the 600m, Sophia Potter achieved a PB in the 800m and Amelie Potter in the 75m.

Maya Pocock in her first competitive event had good times/distances across all three of her events. Isla Kinniburgh and Livvy Heppenstall ran strongly in their first competitive 1500m.

Isabelle Stevens was second in the U13 High Jump and Amelia Jeffers had great times in both the 75m Hurdles and the 100m. Our only U17 athlete, Lilah Unwin, won the 800m convincingly.

Saturday 25th June English Schools regional final

Competing against schools from Kent, Sussex, London, Hampshire, Hertfordshire and Middlesex, Max Orchard came a very respectable 7th with a total of 2134 points.

In fact he was only 17 points off 6th and a place at the National finals, not bad in his first year. Along the way he achieved new PB's in his 80m hurdles (13.01 secs), Long Jump (5.34m) and 800m (2.15.52)

Paddy achieved silver in the Surrey Masters 100m on Saturday. He tells us that this was in the breaststroke!

Sunday 26th June Eton Dorney 10K

Linda Rodriguez took part in the Eton Dorney 10K last weekend. It would have been a lot more efficient and certainly faster to run it, but swim she did.

It took her 4 and a half hours, which was far longer than she'd expected, but there was a fair amount of wind making some choppy, washing-machine conditions. She also decided, rather last minute, to ditch the wetsuit and go skins -- the water was a tropical 20 degrees, after all -- but that made for a slower time and some chill fatigue at times. All in all she reports that it was a pretty good swim and she's feeling more ready for her 7.5 miles in Ullswater in a few weeks!

Sunday 26th June Denbies North Downs Half Marathon

... and back to running, Hannah Williams completed the Denbies North Downs Half Marathon in 02:28:09.

Due to resting a number of injuries and illnesses she tells us that she was very unprepared (but finally healthy!) at the start line.

Hannah says "the weather was amazing and the course was beautiful - worth all the hills for the views" (although she's not sure that she was saying that at the time).

Sunday 26th June Giant's Head Half, Dorset

Gail Griffiths's photos from the Giant's Head Half in Dorset. Blimey Gail, I'm comparing the size of the ice creams with the size of your heads. Did you manage to finish them?

Sunday 26th June Cotswold Way 100Km

Kate reports that she's completed yet another marathon.

Kate tells us that the route was very hilly and brutal in places, but she enjoyed every moment. She started Saturday morning and finished on Sunday evening.

Thursday 28th July Run Reigate Trail Race (by Moray Carey)

Run Reigate, creators of the Run Reigate series of races in September, added another event to their portfolio in February - the Run Reigate Trail.

The one-lap 5k or two-lap 10k took place within the picturesque grounds of Gatton Park but on an altogether different route to the original Gatton 10k designed and hosted by the Redhill & Surrey Beagles, latterly RPAC.

Run Reigate’s moderately undulating course starts on the elevated Parterre (terrace) overlooking the grounds below through which it meanders, including skirting the lake.

They’ve now decided to reprise this race but in the summer - at 6.30pm on Thursday 28th July (an unfortunate choice of date since it clashes with the final SLH Informal 10k of the summer).

The event is chip timed and your entry fee of £25 for either distance earns you a finishing memento of a medal and buff. A parking space may be pre-booked but is chargeable.

For more information see www.runreigate.com/trail-event

Thursday 23rd June quiz night at the Blue Anchor

Report from the field... last quiz night two weeks ago the Reigate Priory AC team lead the whole way to be pipped at the last round to come 2nd. Last Thursday we thought we had it in the bag, drew and lost the decider - 2nd again!

The thing is we still got more than our stake back and a bottle too, so not all bad! (Money went to the YMCA by the way.)

Couch to 5K Graduation / Parkrun tourism at Ifield Mill Pond Parkrun Saturday 27th November

We're off to Ifield Mill Pond for the Couch to 5K Graduation on 27th November. This is a parkrun that has fewer finishers than most (last week there were 55). It is pretty flat and run on tarmac paths. Whether you wish to come along to support the Couch to 5K graduands or whether you wish to run on your own, you're very welcome to come along and join in. It would be great if we can get a good turnout to support our fledgling runners.

We will be meeting up at 8:30AM near Gossops Green Community Centre (use postcode RH11 8HJ) - note that this car park is near the only loo available and is a 5 or 10 minute walk to the start.

We will be going to the nearby Squires Garden Centre (formerly called Cheals - the postcode is RH11 8PL and it's NOT the one near Buckland ) afterwards for breakfast and they do require numbers, so please do let Paul Walters know if you wish to attend

You can find the details of the parkrun at https://www.parkrun.org.uk/ifieldmillpond/ and you can see details of the breakfasts at

2022 Club Championships

We are assuming that a normal race calendar will be possible in 2022 and have decided to revert to the normal format whereby the Club Championships are held over a series of nominated races. The first club championship race will be the Wokingham Half Marathon which will be held on 27th February. This is a fast, flattish course that is good PB material. This race sells out quickly you can enter here.

The other championship races will be the Wimbledon Dash 5K and the Dorking 10 mile (both also Surrey Championship races - dates TBC) with the 10K race being confirmed once all the league fixtures are known.

We are also looking at reviving the club Grand Prix competition - details to follow in a later newsletter.
