Your Club Needs You On Sunday 6th March !

On Sunday 6th March RPAC is hosting a "double header" event in Priory Park. The day starts with the MABAC league race at 10:00, followed by the junior Border League event at 12:00. We need volunteers to help set up the course before hand (including people who would be willing to collect equipment from Battlebridge and transport it to Priory Park), to act as marshals, etc. during the events, and to help break down the course and pack away the equipment afterwards. We do not expect people to volunteer for the whole time and we have created a form on which you can specify times at which you are able to help. More details will be coming out to you soon via email, including a link to the volunteer form. In the meantime if you have any questions about how you can help please email me

This is an event that involves the whole club. As many of the seniors will want to take part in the MABAC race and many of the junior parents will want to watch the Border League races it would be really good if the two sections of the club could work together on this.

Awards Evening 30th April 2022

Just a reminder that the new date for the Awards evening is Saturday 30th April 2022. Tickets are on sale via LoveAdmin. If you have already purchased a ticket this will be valid for the new date.

Give us your results please

If you run in an event, do please let us know your results by emailing . If possible please can you submit them by Sunday evening at the latest as this allows us to meet the deadline for the Surrey Mirror sports pages.

Tadworth 10 Sunday 16th January

Apologies that this was missed from last week's newsletter but James England, Ruth Willis, Lisa Ashley and Andrew Pringle took part in the Tadworth 10 last Sunday. Well done to you all! This is a great local race that starts and finishes on Epsom Downs. I have vivid memories of running up Ebbisham Lane.

Members' News

Congratulations to Hannah Wright and Martin Wadham whose daughter Annabelle was born on New Year's Eve. What a lovely way to start 2022, I hope you are all doing well.

Ben Stanton reports that he and "Jon Payn and Andrew Reeves (running for Serpentine, but 2nd claim for RPAC) ran the Box Hill Fell Race on Saturday 22nd. A 12k course but with 520m of climbing, plenty of trails, some mud and a herd of rather large cows on course, it was certainly tough.

Full results are here; Andrew won the MV50 prize, and the course record was broken by a national champion fell runner, in 52 minutes.

Andrew and I also ran the Fred Hughes 1mile road race in St Albans today (Sunday 23rd). It’s a hilly but fast course on closed roads and well supported throughout. I ran a PB, despite the aches of the fell race in my legs."

Wow, that is very impressive guys, well done to all of you.

Surrey XC League, Mitcham Common, 15 Jan

The third match in this year's Surrey XC League took place at Mitcham Common on Saturday. On a mainly dry but heavy and undulating course, there were great performances from RPAC Juniors in highly competitive races.

The first race saw U15G'S Ella Scrase and Sophia Bryant in action with both putting in typically strong runs with their trademark fast finishes. Both girls were well placed at the finish.

They were followed by the U13G'S race where our two non-scorers (as not yet 11years old),  Lisette Matthews and Florence Tombleson both ran superb races and finished close to the front. Eloise Matthews, Florence Shade, Neve MacGregor and Livvy Heppenstall completed a strong line up with all four showing great determination and plenty of promise with good performances all round.

The boys match started with the U13 race where Max Orchard,  as ever, was never far from the front finishing in an excellent 9th place. There was strong support from Rocco Secker and Jason Skinner who were both well placed at the finish.

The final juniors race saw our joint U17/U15 boys team win their match by a considerable margin, cementing their overall lead at the top of the league.

It was a thoroughly impressive performance!

With four to score,  RPAC had four finishing in the top 10 places. Oscar Curry continues to impress and is going from strength to strength, taking 1st place!

Samuel Stapley finished 3rd and was the 1st U15 home. With Euan Willis 8th (2nd U15) and Sammy Rolaston 10th (4th U15), 1st place in the team result was assured.  It was great too seeing a strong performance from Will John-Cox who has been dogged by injuries recently.

In the League's individual award rankings, Oscar is currently No1 in the U17's. Samuel Stapley is No1 and Euan No2 in the U15 's.

The final match in the Surrey League takes place on Saturday 19th February at Effingham Common. An easy to get to, reasonably local venue with plenty of parking! All Juniors in year six and above are eligible to run and encouraged to take part.

Juniors at the Surrey XC Championships, Dorking Sunday 9th January

A dry sunny day for this year's Surrey XC Championships at Denbies on Sunday but after a day of persistent rain on Saturday, the hilly course was as muddy and challenging as expected.

Coping especially well with the conditions were Samuel Stapley who finished 3rd in the U15 boys race, and Oscar Curry who was 4th in the U17's. Both have won automatic selection to the Surrey team for the CAU National Inter-counties XC Championships at Loughborough in March. This is the major XC Championships involving all the counties from across the UK. A great achievement by both!

Other notable finishes included Sammy Rolaston 10th in the U15B'S, Nicole Haycock 15th and Ella Scrase 18th in the U15G'S and an especially great turn out in the U13B'S race saw RPAC finish 4th in the team results. Our leading finishers were Max Orchard in 11th place, Stanley Phillips 16th, Buddy Kedgley 21st and Teemu Sara-aho 25th.

There were many other excellent performances and it was great to see so many from RPAC competing in this major championship event. A particular mention for Florence Shade who was only eligible to enter as she had her 11th birthday the day before the race! Florence duly delivered a fine performance and in keeping with a few others who ran, will have another two years competing as an U13 at this event.

Full results can be viewed at www.surreyathletics.org.uk

South London Athletics Network (SLAN) Indoor Open, David Weir Leisure Centre Carshalton , 8th January 2022

Congratulations to you both.

Please note the slightly earlier start times for the boys races than previously advertised.
Please see the information about the course here and about parking here

Border League fixtures - dates for your diaries

The final two Border League fixtures are on Sunday 13th February at Guildford and Sunday 6th March in Priory Park. It would be great to have strong representation from RPAC for these matches. Surrey XC Championships Denbies Sunday 9th January

RPAC was well represented at the Surrey XC Champ[ionships held at Denbies yesterday.

The RPAC Ladies' Team, comprised of Eloise Bull, Laura Ebbs, Ruth Willis and Kate Pain finished in 9th place (out of 14 teams). Also running but not scoring were Maxine Voutilainen, Lucy Kulp and Sharon Miller.

The RPAC Men's Team, comprised of Steve Bass, Lee Savage, Ben Stanton, Ian Stammars, Mike Pocock and Jon Payn, finished in 14th place .

Well done to all of you for taking part on what I understand was a challenging an very slippery course.

Sunday 16th January - MABAC Windsor Great Park & Club Grand Prix

Fancy catching a glimpse of Her Majesty (or at least of Windsor Castle)? Why not run the MABAC race in Windsor Great Park on Sunday (16th January)?

We finished in 3rd place in the MABAC League in 2021, let's start as we mean to go on this year and get a really strong turnout. You don't need to be quick (although that helps), it's the numbers that count.

Everyone always rates this race as their favourite of the MABAC events. This is an unusual MABAC race in that it is longer than normal at approximately 8 miles and it is mostly on paths (definitely road shoes). More details are here. We have been advised that there will be staggered starts for men and ladies and for the shorter distance race (2 miles).

If you have a race number from last year it's probably as well to bring that along although strictly speaking we should get new numbers.

Parking in the park is limited and very pricey (I think it cost me £13 last year!) so car shares are essential. There is no free parking adjacent to Blacknest Gate. Prompt 08:30 departure from Bell St Car Park for shares. If you need a lift or are able to take others please let me know

()

A reminder that this is the first event in our relaunched Club Grand Prix (details TBA) - apologies to those of you who are running the Tadworth 10 on the same day.

Following the survey sent to attendees of Tuesday track sessions, the survey results have been analysed.  Groups and training sessions will change from Tuesday 25th January but until then, please continue as-is with Less Intense and Middle Distance sessions at 7pm and an Endurance at 8pm.  An email will be sent w/c 15th January with further information on the new groups & sessions.

A reminder that the first Club Championship race of 2022 is the Wokingham Half Marathon on Sunday 27th February.  Places are still available here but with over 3000 entries so far and a 3500 limit you need to apply soon if you are planning to run. Entries close once the limit has been reached or on 16th February 2022 at the latest.

Congratulations to Doug and Rachel Kington on the birth of their daughter Rowan, who was born at 03:22 on Wednesday morning (5th January). Doug reports that apart from a bit of sleep deprivation they are all doing well. It can't be too bad as I saw Doug at Parkrun on Saturday and he looked pretty chipper and quite speedy to boot.

George Roux started 2022 in style by winning a 5K race in Whitinsville, near Boston, Massachusetts on New Year's Day. He won in 16:24, beating his nearest rival by a minute and six seconds. There's nothing like starting a new year as you mean to go on George; well done!

Jim Vince got his first Ultra event of the year under his belt yesterday, completing the Country to Capital 43 mile event from Wendover in Buckinghamshire to Little Venice near Paddington. Jim reports that it was  "a bit wet and muddy at times but a great little event! I also managed to finish with a kiwi mate of mine! ".  Great stuff Jim!

Congratulations to our Couch to 5K Graduates

On Saturday morning six members of our Couch to 5K course graduated by completing the Ifield Millpond Parkrun. The weather conditions were "adverse" (absolutely freezing with a brisk northerly wind and a bit of drizzle). Despite this they all completed the run in very respectable times. Well done to our new graduates Luke, Carol, Katie, Kerry, Alice and Karen! You are amazing - what a journey from 1 minute of running 10 weeks ago. Each graduate was presented with a RPAC medal as a memento of the course. Some of them have subsequently signed up for the Santa Run in Priory Park on 5th December (see below) and we are hoping that some of them will become club members.

Our graduates were supported and encouraged by 11 RPAC runners who ran with them. Thank you very much to all of you for turning out in such horrid conditions to support them. I think breakfast afterwards was some compensation! Ian Stammars was the first RPAC runner home, finishing in second place in 18:58 and Alice Smith was the first lady home in eleventh place overall, finishing in 21:23.

Left to right - Paul Sapsard, Kate Knight, Paul Walters, Sarah Walters, Bethany Higgins, Andrew Bamford, Jake Boud, Sharon Miller, Usha Stevens (both sheltering behind the sign),  Adrian Grant, Ian Stammars and our Couch to 5K graduates Katie, Karen, Alice, Kerry, Carol and Luke. Missing from the picture is Alice Smith.

We plan to run a new Couch to 5K course starting early in the New Year. Watch this space for further details.

Congratulations to Usha

Congratulations to Usha Stevens who has recently completed her Coach In Running Fitness (CIRF) course. This is the second rung of the coaching ladder and allows Usha to lead coaching sessions without the supervision of a more senior coach. This is very important to us as we continue to grow as a club and numbers at training sessions increase. Well done Usha, you are a star! I know it has involved a great deal of hard work to get this qualification.

RPAC Awards Evening

Give us your results please

If you run in an event, do please let us know your results by emailing . If possible please can you submit them by Sunday evening at the latest as this allows us to meet the deadline for the Surrey Mirror sports pages.

Wednesday 1st December Training Session Cancelled

The normal Wednesday evening session is cancelled this week as many of the Wednesday regulars are going out for a Christmas meal instead.

MABAC Winterfold Forest 5th December 10:00

There is a MABAC event this coming Sunday at 10:00 in Winterfold Forest. From memory a large part of this course is run on tarmac so you could probably get away with road shoes, although there are some parts which can be muddy or sandy. This course has a "killer hill" which is very steep but quite short. Don't forget that there is a one lap option if you don't want to do the full distance.

I seem to remember that parking is a challenge - the nearest car parks are Hurtwood Car Park 6 or Hurtwood Car Park 5 on Alderbrook Road and Greensand Lane respectively. There are directions here and the What3Words reference is proves.imagined.bolts.

We are third in the league at the moment; it would be great if we could retain or improve on that position. In order to do that we need to get a good turnout; every runner scores at least 5 points in the two lap race and 2 points in the one lap race. If you haven't done one of these races before I can guarantee that you will enjoy it and you will find someone to compete with irrespective of your speed.

Meet in Bell St car park at 08:30 if you want to car share. Please let me know if you need a lift or can drive . Unfortunately I cannot attend this event so I will need a volunteer to take the register, dish out numbers, etc. Please do not forget your race number if you have one.

Stop Press: There is a bit of a shortage of volunteers at this event. Please let me know if are not planning to run and are able and willing to help out.

Tuesday 7th December Xmas Drinks at The Jolly Brickmakers

We will be gathering for Christmas drinks at the Jolly Brickmakers after the 7pm training session on 7th December. Please note there will be no 8pm session that evening.

Club Championships - Age Graded Award

This year we have a brand spanking new age graded trophy up for grabs.  Could yours be the first name on it? (Apologies for the poor picture - it was really hard to photograph! )

Eligibility criteria are as follows:

  • Any recognised race distance is eligible
  • Track and road races are eligible
  • The race must be included in your profile on Power of 10 and be eligible for rankings (see here for more information about what races qualify for ranking). I'm sorry to say that this means that Parkruns are not eligible.
  • The winning result of the Andy Winterton Trophy (best age graded marathon) cannot be used to win this trophy as well.

If you have a result that you would like to submit for the Age Graded Award please visit the WMA Age Grading Calculator website, calculate your age graded score and submit it together with the race details and your age on the day of the race to me ( ) for verification. If you have trouble calculating your age grading please let me know and I will endeavour to do it for you  (again I will need the race details and your age on the day of the race).

The Turkey Trot - Denbies Sunday 19th December

It's a 9:00AM meet-up and a 9:15AM start for the traditional RPAC Turkey Trot run.

For those new to the club, the Turkey Trot is a seasonal get-together for a run/walk followed by refreshments in Denbies afterwards - all welcome.

Ian Edmonds will lead a run of approximately 10Km to Ranmore and back.

Paul Walters will also lead a 4 mile walk from Denbies, but note that the walk will start promptly at 9:00AM.

Wear something Christmassy!

Sharon Miller's Virtual Route 66 Challenge

Over the course of the past 11 months Sharon Miller has run the equivalent of the length of the famous Route 66 - a total  of 2280 miles. This is an extraordinary achievement that is the equivalent of running over 87 marathons, or almost 8 marathons per month! I noticed also that Sharon has clocked up 519 runs during this period, or three runs every two days. Sharon says that she wore out three pairs of shoes in the course of this challenge. Absolutely amazing Sharon, well done to you!

Senior Trophies

I really need to collect the senior trophies back in as soon as possible to give me plenty of time to get them refurbished and engraved in time for the Awards Evening. Please bring them along to Battlebridge if at all possible or contact me to discuss alternative collection/delivery arrangements    . Some people have retained trophies since 2019; we need them all back this year please. I will name and shame if necessary smile
