Run Reigate 2021

I have done my best to identify everyone who took part in the Run Reigate Half Marathon, 10K and 5K races. It wasn't easy because of the different formats of club name used on the entries and because of the number of new members who presumably entered the race before they were club members, as well as a few long established club members who were presumably too shy to admit that they were members (you know who you are smile ).  So far I have identified 55 members who competed, please let me know if I have missed you. The results are in the senior results section

There were some stand out performances from both senior and junior RPAC athletes - special mention should be made of Neil Fenwick who finished 8th overall in the Half Marathon in a time of 01:22:13, of Max Smithson who finished 3rd overall in the 10K in a time of 35:09 and of Euan Willis who finished 3rd overall (and first in his age category) in the 5K in a time of 19:49. Euan ran in the U15 age category. There are some pictures of some of the senior runners in the senior section below.

Give us your results please

If you run in an event, do please let us know your results by emailing . If possible please can you submit them by Sunday evening at the latest as this allows us to meet the deadline for the Surrey Mirror sports pages.

Veterans: Could you be running in an England Vest next year?

You will have seen the report in this week's newsletter about Ginevra's run at the Richmond Runfest Half Marathon on Sunday, wearing an England vest, but may be wondering how she got to be selected. Read on to find out!

England Athletics organise a number of events each year for the "England Masters Age Group" teams, at 10K, Half Marathon and Marathon distances. There is one representative race at each distance each year, in 2022 these will be Great Bristol 10K, the Chester Half Marathon and the Chester Marathon. If selected, these are the races in which you get to wear your England vest and compete against the best Masters athletes in England. There is often a team race against the Celtic nations as well, although the effects of COVID meant this did not happen in 2021.

There are 4 qualification races for each distance. You enter one or more of these races as normal, and pre-register with EA that you are seeking to qualify at the race. On the day, you "simply" need to finish in the top 3 of those in your age category who have pre-registered with EA. If anyone ahead of you has already qualified, they are effectively removed from the results (i.e. you move up a place). There is also a qualification time standard, which you must have achieved in either the qualifying race or in a previous race (since 1st Jan 2020 for 2022 qualification). Achieve all that and you are on your way.

There are club members who are perfectly capable of achieving selection - even if you are not successful, it will give your racing in 2022 a focus and allow you to plan your year around the qualification races.

Full details are available on the EA website here. Or talk to Ginevra or me for further information.

Sunday 12th September - Ginevra races in England Masters Representative Team at the Half Marathon at Richmond Runfest

Ginevra Stoneley qualified for the team at the Milton Keynes half marathon in December 2019, where she was the 3rd lady overall in a time of 85:01. The representative race was due to be the Fleet Half Marathon in March 2019. However, that was then cancelled in the week before because of the first COVID lockdown. So 18 months later, the selected athletes finally got their opportunity to race in their England vests on Sunday 12th September.

Ginevra finished 2nd W45 in both the England representative race and the open race, finishing in 87:05 just 19 seconds behind the 1st place W45. 14th woman overall (all age groups). The course was not easy, with about half the race on the Thames Towpath and the last half mile on grass.

Lee Savage also ran in the open race, finishing 21st, setting a new PB of 78:09. That is an achievement on this course.

The results are available here.

Resumption of Saturday Morning 9:00AM Group

The Saturday morning 9am training group will resume this Saturday 11th September.

Saturday 4th September YDL @ Sutton

The final YDL of the season was held at Sutton on Saturday. We were co- hosting with Camberley and are indebted to our wonderful officials who gave up their Saturday afternoon to make this event happen. We are fortunate to have some highly qualified officials supporting the Club, Ivan Barrett was Field Referee on the day, Ashley Burridge, Chief Timekeeper, and Ian Crouch ran a number of field events on behalf of the Club.

We had a number of strong performances from Reigate athletes, Michael Maguire won the U13 Long Jump, Max Orchard the U13 75m hurdles and Ewan Willis the U15 1500m, after a very exciting last lap. Isaac Beckett got PBs in the long jump and 800m. Eve Golding was pipped on the line in the U13 75m and Ella Scrase and Florence Carter continued their very consistent 800m performances. Imogen Wheeler was also pipped on the line coming second in the U15 girls 100m, whilst Lily Woodhams won the B string race.

That is it for the Athletics season. Cross country season is up shortly. As we transition, the next event for the older athletes, 11 and older, is the Southern Road Relays at Crystal Palace on 26 September.

Junior Training Tops

We have recently taken deliver of a new batch of Club training tops for Juniors. They come in Red, Light Blue and Dark Blue. They cost £16 and can be ordered and paid for via the LoveAdmin site.

Trust10 Polesden Lacey by Moray Carey

The National Trust’s Facilities & Support Services Manager at Polesden Lacey has confirmed that the monthly 10k run has been reinstated there, following suspension since the start of the original lockdown.

This is not a race but a self-guided, self-timed run which takes place around a waymarked, 10k route through the extensive Polesden Lacey estate.

The multi terrain course weaves in and out of woodland and is challenging with steep undulations. You start with a long descent and, ultimately, to regain this high spot at the end of the race there’s a steady climb back up! In between there are several more hills to negotiate.

Intermittently, there are clearings offering viewpoints back towards the honey- coloured mansion perched high on its elevated hillside location.

You self-navigate the course by following the direction arrows etched into posts positioned at strategic points where there’s a choice of more than one trail. The route is unmarshalled, so you need to be vigilant!

The seasons offer different sensory experiences - winter mud, spring bluebells, summer sunlight filtering through the tree top canopies and a golden carpet of leaves in the autumn when the trees are at their majestic, colourful best.

·         Where – National Trust, Polesden Lacey, RH5 6BD

·         When – 4th Sunday, every month (08:30 for 09:00 start)

·         Cost – free (car parking charge if you’re not an NT member)

For further information see...

Surrey Road Relays - Wimbledon 4th September 2021

Surrey Road Relays - Wimbledon 4th September 2021

Surrey Road Relays - Wimbledon Park 4th September 2021

RPAC fielded a strong team for the Surrey County Athletics Association Road Relays held in Wimbledon on Saturday (4th September).

Back row left to right: Karen Lloyd, Peter Luxton, Andrew Bamford, Adrian Grant, Tom Almond, Steve Bass, Max Smithson, Ben Stanton, Andrew Patrick, Frank O'Regan (with Bobby), Ian Stammars, Alastair Swanepoel, Ginevra Stoneley, Jo Davey

Front row left to right: Malcolm Woodman, Angie Steadman, Taryn Bennett, Gillian O'Regan, Nat Wilson, Lucy Berryman, Bethany Higgins, Jenny Carus, Jamilla Ncayiyana

Twenty four RPAC athletes took part and we fielded teams in the Senior Men, M40, M60, Senior Ladies, Ladies V35 and Ladies V45 races. All teams competed strongly but the ladies V45 team produced the stand out performance of the day taking the gold medal position by nearly three minutes. The ladies V45 team comprised of Ginevra Stoneley, Jo Davey and Nat Wilson. They came first, second and fourth respectively in their age category.   The ladies V35 comprised of  Taryn Bennett, Gillian O'Regan, Angie Steadman and Karen Lloyd took bronze in their race.  Fastest finishers were George Roux for the men, finishing in 15:09 and Ginevra Stoneley was our fastest lady, finishing in 17:56.  It was good to see Steve Bass back in an RPAC vest after his Antipodean Adventures.

The races comprise a lap of approximately 3 miles starting and finishing on the athletics track in Wimbledon Park. From the start the course leads out of the park into Wimbledon Park Road and up past the All England Tennis Courts on Church Road - that hill seems to get progressively steep - before turning left into St Mary's Road (still slightly uphill) then via Arthur Road and Hone Park Road back into the park. The finish is approximately 200m on the track. The senior men's race is 6 laps, the M40 is 4 laps, the M60 is 3 laps, the senior ladies and ladies 35 run 4 laps and the ladies 45 run 3 laps.

Full details are in the senior results section.  Well done everyone!

 Parkrun Results

This week we had club members participating in Parkruns from Middlesborough to Horsham. Annette Morris set a very high bar on the age graded scale with her time of 23:51 which earned her an age graded score of 84.98% - this was the highest age graded score of the 434 runners at Horsham Parkrun this week. This followed hot on the heels of Annette topping the age grade score at Banstead Woods last weekend. Well done Annette! Closest to Annette on age grading this week was Lee Savage with his time of 17:51 at Albert Parkrun, Middlesborough. This earned him an age graded score of 77.59%.

Junior Section News

Lily B Report by Mike Gent

The final Lily B Girls match of the season was held at Sutton on Saturday 28th August. There was a strong RPAC turn out.

Eva Marsh won the U17 1500m, with Louise Bressler in second place with a PB.

Ella Scrase was second in U15 800m and Florence Carter achieved a PB in the same race. Lily Woodhams improved her 100m PB.

Neve Macgregor battled with great determination to come second in the U13 1500m. Imogen Abrahams and Olivia Heppenstall both ran well in their events.

Eve Goulding demonstrated that as well as being a great sprinter she is a very competitive javelin thrower too.

Amongst the U11s the two 600m races were both won by RPAC athletes, Lisette Matthews and Florence Tombleson, in very exciting finishes in both cases. Florence and Gracie Shade both achieved 600m PBs in the same races. Lara Tombleson and Freya Else both performed strongly in their first time representing the Club.

My highlight is always the relays and the RPAC quartet won the U11 4x100m in exciting style when Freja Kargbo, having earlier had one of the fastest 75m times, made up two places on the final leg to just take the win on the line.

The winning relay team!

Max Orchard Excels in Tonbridge by Dave Mills

Max cleared 1m 33 in the high jump, a PB, and also PB'D in the Shot with 6.73m.

Max's score puts him at number 1 in the UK for U13B Pentathlon at the time of writing.

Next up for Max is the Surrey Combined Events Championships in Carshalton on Saturday week.

The terms of our agreement with Reigate and Banstead Borough Council prevent us from turning on the lights until 1st September. Please wear something bright and use a headtorch until the lights have been switched on (next week).
