Junior Section News
The Surrey T&F Championships were held in Kingston across Saturday and Sunday. Heavy rain on Saturday afternoon affected many times and distances but otherwise the conditions were good. As ever, there was a large contingent of RPAC officials in attendance and the athletes are very appreciative of the time and effort that the officials put in.
U17W 1500m Final - Gold for Eva
First up for RPAC on Saturday morning was Eva Marsh in the U17W'S 1500m. Eva has been having a very strong season with a string of PB's registered and there was no holding back as she went straight into the lead and ran away from the pack to take Gold. She finished some 14 seconds ahead of the rest in a new PB time of 4.51.56.
U15G'S 800m - Gold for Lilah
The U15G'S 800m involved heats on Saturday with the qualifiers returning on Sunday for the final. Ella Scrase was unfortunate to be placed in heat 3 as the first two heats went off in dry, calm conditions. Heat 3 was run in pouring rain. With two to qualify from each heat, plus the two quickest losers, Ella just missed out despite battling the conditions well to finish 3rd.
Lilah Unwin won her heat comfortably and true to form after a great summer, led all the way in the final to complete the 800m double of Surrey Champion as well as Surrey Schools Champion. Lilah competes again next weekend in the England Athletics U17/U15 Championships in Manchester.
U15B'S 800m - Gold for Samuel
Samuel Stapley also won his heat on Saturday and returned on Sunday to replicate Eva and Lilah by going out fast and leading throughout to win the U15B'S 800m. Samuel clocked a new PB with 2.03.43 which was the 10th quickest 800m run by an U15 boy in the UK this year.
Last Saturday at the Ebbisham Boys League, Samuel broke the club record in the U15B'S 300m with a fast 39.1. Well done Samuel!
U13B'S Long Jump - Gold for Max, Silver for Michael
In very wet conditions on Saturday afternoon Max Orchard and Michael Maguire took Gold and Silver in the long jump. PB's were never likely in the downpour, but both boys jumped strongly to show why they are both ranked in the UK top ten for U13B'S long jump this year.
U13B'S Javelin and 800m - Two Silvers for Max
Max Orchard showed what a talented all round athlete he is by picking up two Silver medals to add to his Gold in the long jump. Three Medals Max!
In the 800m's he lost out by just six hundredths of a second after a shoulder to shoulder battle down the home straight.
The Javelin final was more straightforward although again, the conditions were very poor, but a throw of 20.52 metres secured Max his third medal of the day!
It is noted also that last weekend at the Ebbisham Boys League, Max broke to club's U13B'S 200m record with a very quick 27.2. Well done Max!
U13B'S 100m - Bronze for Michael
Another young athlete having a great season is Michael Maguire. After qualifying through the heats on Sunday, Michael ran a new PB time of 13.67 to add the 100m Bronze medal to his Silver from the long jump. Two medals at the Surrey Championships is an excellent return!
4th and 5th place finishes for U17's Oscar and Lucy
In the U17B'S 800m Oscar Curry ran a storming heat securing 1st place. In the final run later in the day, Oscar finished 4th with a PB time of 2.02.89. The first five finishers were separated by less than 2 seconds!
Lucy Dénecé stepped up for only her second 3000m and took 5th place in the final with a new PB.

MABAC Wimbledon 19:30 *** Tomorrow ***
We encourage runners of all standards to participate in the MABAC race. Finishing times for 5 miles at the various venues range from 26 to 65 minutes, so you can see everyone will get a good run with others around you!. It is free to enter and you do not need to register in advance, race numbers will be provided on the night. Just turn up in your club vest ready to run. The more runners we have get the better our score is likely to be.
The race starts at 19:30 at Wimbledon Rugby Club. This year the entrance is via Preston Road (SW20 0SS), rather than Barham Rd, as the grass area where we normally park has been re-seeded. Unfortunately, unlike previous years at Wimbledon, no food will be available…. however, the bar will be open after the race.
The race is either an approximately 5 mile two lap course or there is a one lap option if you don't fancy running the whole distance (or will take much longer than 65 minutes to complete 5 miles off road). The route is all off road and involves a bit of a climb, the surface is grass at the start and finish and sandy for the majority of the route.
If you are willing to drive other club members, or you need a lift to or from Wimbledon please let us know by emailing
Please ensure that you read the Covid secure protocol on the MABAC website https://running.mabac.org.uk/2021/07/31/runners-covid-protocol/
